Cerularius, Michael

Cerularius, Michael
(d. 1059)
   Patriarch.
Cerularius became a monk after the suicide of his brother and he was consecrated Patriarch of Constantinople in 1043. He disapproved of the practices of the Roman Church and, as Patriarch, he tried to force the Latin churches in Constantinople to adopt the Greek rite. When they insisted on their traditional modes of worship, he closed them down. The Roman Church promptly excommunicated Cerularius in 1053 and, in retaliation, the Patriarch pronounced anathemas on the Pope’s representatives. In fact the differences between Rome and Constantinople went back for many centuries and rested on doctrines such as the origin of the Holy Spirit and the supremacy of the Pope. None the less the formal schism between East and West is conveniently dated from the time of Patriarch Michael and Pope Leo ix.
